Neal’s Lit Word

Title: "Pride Killers"

Scripture: 2 Chronicles 32:24-26

24 Hezekiah became mortally ill; and he prayed to the Lord, and the Lord spoke to him and gave him a sign. 25 But Hezekiah gave no return for the benefit he received, because his heart was proud; therefore wrath came on him and on Judah and Jerusalem. 26 However, Hezekiah humbled the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the Lord did not come on them in the days of Hezekiah.

Observation: What is God saying to me?

The battle of pride and humility is ever present in the lives of people.
Hezekiah was just rescued from the onslaught of an evil king. God himself sent an angel and destroyed the in coming king of Assyria who sought to destroy Hezekiah and Israel. Hezekiah became very rich and prospered in the land. That’s when pride came in!

Then God allows a deathly illness to hit Hezekiah, yet Hezekiah did not immediately repent and return his heart to the Lord. Eventually, Hezekiah was worn down and “humbled himself” before the Lord and the Lord healed him and relented from bringing destruction upon him.

Application: What will I do about it?

We have to guard our hearts against pride. Pride pushes people, even people who once “truly trusted” God, away from God. It causes us to say, “I’ve got this.” I don’t need God because I know what to do.

When pride shows up, God’s gifts to break our pride can be problems, stress, opposition and even sickness. These “pride killers” can drive us to our humble knees.

Rest and trust that your only hope of success is staying humble before God. Pride comes before destruction, humility comes before honor.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, You walked the humble road and faced opposition to the point of death. You train us through trials and keep us humble through allowing circumstances that are out of our control come upon us. Teach us to remain humble and not take matters into our own hands. Into your hands we commit our spirits, souls, and bodies. Only by your blood is this possible. In Jesus name!
